Tubtime tea? It’s funny that when the year draws to an end and we embrace those fresh autumn mornings and cosy winter nights I find myself drawn back to a city I love… Bath. Coincidence perhaps, or could it be the prospect of a pot of tea and a stroll through Bath’s beautiful Georgian streets becomes all too compelling?
Quality time may be the greatest gift you can give this year… Bath is a city I almost feel at home in, over the years I’ve been with family and friends who share a similar affection for this place - so when October began to make its presence felt with pumpkins and crunchy leaves underfoot, I loved the idea of spending the day fully present in Bath with a loved one.
As our train arrives into Bath Spa station there’s no decision making required, we know exactly where we’re going to end up, that is until a beautiful bookshop catches our eye. We didn’t hesitate to explore this museum of literature with maps and framed artwork - a treasure trove that seems so fitting for this historic city.
Cream Tea in Sally Lunns, Bath Back on track we make our way to the oldest house in Bath, Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House, not far from the Abbey and Roman Baths.
Our timing is perfect, there’s no queue (sometimes there’s a line of people out the door waiting to try Bath’s famous bun) and we settle down for an early lunch.
There are many options to have tea for two in Bath, and I can’t say I’ve tried many, Sally Lunn’s always hits the spot for me. We ordered two pots of tea, a Welsh Rarebit (a bun topped with cheese and a pot of chutney) and ‘The Bath Cream Tea’ which is served with a scrumptious coating of cinnamon butter and clotted cream.
The bun melts in your mouth and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment topping up our tea, talking about our shared love of history and making even more plans for trips together.
Over the years there’s been a couple of places in Bath I never tire of stopping by with family and friends - for example the spectacular Royal Crescent where the scent of Turkish delight fills your nose if you quite literally stop to smell the roses there, and of course the well photographed Pulteney Bridge to capture your own picture postcard view of the city.
