At Halloween the veil between our world and the world of the dead is at its thinnest allowing communication with the dead and I’m here for it. Halloween’s popularity in the UK has boomed, with more people reaching back to pagan roots. Halloween started with the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “SAH-win”), a harvest festival that the living shared with those who have passed on. I always leave a plate out for them.
Pumpkin carving
I love every aspect of Halloween. Carving a pumpkin is a must and I try to visit a pick your own pumpkin patch. I never carve the same face into the pumpkin, often opting for a simple yet spooky design each year.
The traditions of dressing up and carving pumpkins on All Hallow’s Eve was a way of blending in with the spirits who had crossed the veil and for the living to protect themselves from harm. Medieval villagers hung pumpkin lanterns outside to ward off evil spirits from entering their homes. Now, there is the unspoken rule of having a pumpkin outside your home is inviting trick or treaters to knock at your door, which is such fun, especially as I like to dress up to scare the kids, only a little though!
Wreath making
The wreath making is usually quite random. A dry, crisp autumn day walk is the best place to pick up the bits you’ll need. A large handful of twigs, leaves, conkers, and acorns are best, all wrapped together with twine. If I can, however, I will always try to include some oak leaves as these remind me of the oak tree I used to climb as a kid.
Horror movies
One of my other favourite October activities is watching as many horror films as I can possible fit in. Anything from classic slasher flicks, horror-comedies, and modern supernatural horror. My top three choices are: Drag Me to Hell, Apostle, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. If you’re in London, the Rivioli Ballroom pop up cinema is our fav spot for Halloween film shenanigans this weekend.
Celebrating Halloween is plenty more fun with friends, and a great excuse to dress up in something spooky! This year's party was hosted by my friend, Hannah, and included a BBQ, alcoholic beverages, a film screening, and party games. I chose a gothic vampire look for the evening alongside my partner, whilst other costumes included a bat and the Grim Reaper.
