Llyn Peninsula in Wales - Underrated? I think not!
Today I want to share with you the fabulous Llyn Peninsula in North West Wales. Also known as ‘Snowdon’s Arm’ as it lies in the shadow of Snowdon and extends into the Irish Sea. Like many peninsulas, it has a laid back island vibe where time seems to have stood still for hundreds of years.
Thanks to its unique position, the Llyn Peninsula has a wonderfully sunny microclimate, quite unlike anywhere else in the West of the UK. Even when the weather reports forecast rain, you can guarantee the Llyn Peninsula will have more sun than anywhere else.
This beautiful weather and the vast array of golden beaches are what make the Llyn Peninsula a stunning destination for a beach holiday.
If you, like me, base yourself in the beautiful village of Abersoch where you’ll find plenty of holiday lets. Choose from cosy cottages or simple caravans or even mansions with swimming pools and moorings for your yacht! If you’re on a budget then I’d recommend camping as there are lots of lovely campsites with great facilities.
For our first evening in Abersoch, we picked up stonebaked pizzas from Crust and took them down to the beach. It’s so beautiful here you won’t want to be stuck inside! Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins as you watch the paddle boarders and boaters out at sea.
Getting up early the following morning we headed to Llanbedrog. This tiny but charming village leads to an incredible beach that feels more like a Caribbean island than Wales! Check out Oriel Plas Y Weddw, a spectacular art gallery set in a gothic manor house, before walking down to the beach and admiring the colourful beach huts. Have a coffee at Aqua Beach Bar and take a walk up to the Tin Man who sits proudly on the headland looking out to Cardigan Bay. There’s a three-mile circular walk from here and the dramatic views across Snowdonia are simply breathtaking.
If you enjoy dinner in Abersoch you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants. Opt for The Potted Lobster for incredible seafood, Manana for lively family meals, The Dining Room for a romantic meal or The Cove in the Yacht Club for something really special.
The following day we headed over to Porthdinllaen, another pretty fishing village that’s home to the best pub in Wales! The Ty Coch Inn was voted to have one of the top 10 beach bars in the world, and it’s not hard to see why when you see the views from this pub!
In the afternoon it’s time to hit the water! You could hire surfboards, kayaks or paddle boards in Abersoch or Pwllheli and then head to Porth Neigwl (Hell’s Mouth) if you’re looking for surf. Try Traeth Penllech if you’re new to surfing and would prefer gentle waves. Head to Llanbedrog or Whistling Sands for really calm waters suitable for paddle boarding. Lessons are available with Abersoch Watersports and Offaxis.
We returned home with some great memories to share and pics to enjoy!
With so many places around our fabulous coast you’ll have a great trip wherever you go.
