Cornwall has got to be up there as a top UK staycation and also a perfect holiday to take with the kids’ grandparents or with friends. We've just returned from a holiday to Cornwall and I'm already missing waking up to the sea and even the cheeky seagulls! Everything in our suitcases in covered in sand, as is this car, but oh it was worth it!
We stayed with Away Resorts in Hayle, near St Ives and it's the furthest we'd been into Cornwall from where we live. To break up the long journey we travelled to Taunton the day before, doing half of the journey and went to a beautiful nearby National Trust property called Montacute House (which as we're National Trust members didn't cost us anything extra). We then stayed in a Premier Inn for that night which for a family room was £45. I'm glad we did it that way, as the drive home from Cornwall on the Friday, that we did all in one go, ended up taking ALL day (Top tip: don't travel home from Cornwall during the day on a Friday in summer holidays! - We should have gone Thursday evening in hindsight).
When you live so far from a beach and the sea, it's a real treat when you see and hear the waves of the sea again, I think it feels even more special! My two boys faces lit up when they saw the sea and felt the sand under their feet! When we arrived, we said we'd just have a quick look at the beach as our caravan was just a few minutes walk from it, but we'd arrived early so didn't have the keys and couldn't get changed. But the boys got so excited at the sight of the beach, that they ended up fully clothed in the sea up their waists. To say that they love the beach is a total understatement!\
Breathtaking accommodation We stayed in the brand new Stargazer caravan at St Ives Bay and it literally blew us away! A hot tub on the decking, a bath in the main bedroom, a huge kitchen diner and super modern living room space! I've never seen a caravan like it. We took the boys grandparents with us and it was so nice to have some quality time altogether. Grandma and the boys love a 2p machine, and so there was plenty of that. The boys flew toy aeroplanes with their Grandpop on the beach and loved teaching them how to swim in the indoor pool. We played board and card games in the evenings in our caravan and really enjoyed some chilled-out family bonding time.
St Ives On one of the days, we took a trip into St Ives. St Ives is very popular, so we drove to Trenwith car park and walked downhill into St Ives from there. On the way back we took a bus to the car park as we didn't fancy the trek back uphill. St Ives is really lovely and worth a visit, as busy as it is. We stumbled upon a really lovely spot to have a cup of tea and a slice of cake in the grounds of a church overlooking the beach and sea. (St Ia's - St Ives Parish Church). I sat and watched the dogs in the sea jumping up and down for their balls and living their best lives and it made my heart happy!). We visited Escape Time whilst in St Ives and did a fun pirate treasure themed escape room as a family. We just about managed to find the pirate's golden treasure in time and we had such a laugh and so much fun. After a pasty on the beach it was time to head home. One thing I also noticed about St Ives was that there are vegetarian and vegan options pretty much everywhere - which if you're veggie like me, is pretty awesome to know!
Other Cornwall Highlights We've been to Cornwall a few times before and it's always such a lovely holiday and a beautiful place to make memories that last. If you've never been before, make sure you make time to catch a sunset on the beach, it's just got to be done! Also, consider a day trip to the lovely fishing port of Padstow; it's a lovely place for lunch or dinner.
Tintagel Castle on the north coast of Cornwall is spectacular! Bodmin Jail is a historic former prison which makes for an interesting visit! Port Isaac is full of idyllic coastal views and is where the TV series Doc Martin was filmed! There's also the Old Post Office to visit, which is in Tintagel, it's super interesting and full of history! And you can ride on an old steam train from Bodmin and Wenford railway station for something a bit different!
We think Cornwall has something for everyone and is the perfect place for a UK family holiday!
