Enjoy the autumn colours at Loggerheads We have an autumnal family tradition to visit Loggerheads Country Park. We visit around mid-October each year, when the leaves are at their most colourful and the forest is illuminated with reds, yellows and oranges.
We seem to get lucky each year and opt for a perfect autumnal day, where the sky is blue and the sunlight streams through the trees and dazzles off the brightly coloured leaves. A thick, bouncy carpet of leaves covers the forest floor and encourages even the oldest of family members to run and jump and kick up a flurry of leaves.
It’s just chilly enough to wrap up warm for the first time of the year and we all love the cosy novelty of donning our favourite woolly hats that were hibernating for the summer. Winter boots and wellies come back out as we breathe in that warm and familiar smell of scarves, gloves and wax jackets.
Loggerheads Country Park is in Mold in Denbighshire, North East Wales. A number of forest trails wind their way alongside the River Alyn with dramatic limestone cliffs hugging the path all the way along.
We sometimes take the flat, riverside footpath which leads you deep into the forest and you’re immersed in those autumn leaves. The colours reflect off the glassy river so you’re literally surrounded from every direction!
Recently we’ve been taking an even more dramatic footpath that winds up and above the treeline, into Devil’s Gorge and finally looking up and over the incredible, colourful treeline.
The gorge has 30 metre high limestone walls and we walk inside the icey cold cave to see abseilers and climbers descending and ascending the sheer cliff walls. It’s eerie but magnificent and the steep climb to the top is worth every huff and puff!
We emerge from the dark cave to the colourful leaves outside and it’s like stepping into another world. Suddenly it’s warm and bright again and the whole forest below is ablaze with colour.
This is one of the most incredible places for a colourful, autumn walk!
