My feet crunch along the graveled path as I follow a bubbling stream deeper into the forest. Sunbeams stream through the leafy canopy of the trees while birds chatter noisily ahead. I stop for a moment to listen to their song, which magically become ten times louder when I take a second to acknowledge them! It’s like being in an aviary!
I keep walking until the trees thin out and the rolling mountains of Snowdonia come into view, reminding me that I’m in Wales and not in a tropical woodland somewhere exotic!
We stop for a snack on some perfectly placed boulders, a picnic spot created by Mother Nature herself. Some curious sheep come over to say hello while we check the map as I’m suspecting we’ve taken a wrong path somewhere.
We’re here to see a magnificent waterfall… but this gentle footpath feels like a regular meander through the mountains. We can’t hear the roar of the water or even see a river running by. Have we got lost?
We’re spurred on by a friendly hiker who reassures us we’re ‘nearly there!’ so we keep going. The rocky footpath gets steeper and as we catch our breath…there it is! Aber Falls has come into view!
The 37-metre waterfall is tumbling down a steep cliff face and plunging down the mountain.
We instantly forget our breathlessness as we’re magnetically drawn to the falls and quickly clamber to get as close as possible.
A natural, rocky viewing platform allows us to stand just metres away from the powerful force of the water. We can’t help but be transfixed as we watch the water plummeting down, spellbound by the roar, the spray and the power of it all.
Aber Falls dives into perfect, rocky pools below where brave swimmers and excitable kids paddle in the crystal-clear water.
We have our picnic perched on rocks at the bottom of the waterfall, soaking up all the energy and excitement that comes with so much natural beauty!
We eventually tear ourselves away from the scene and wriggle back into our walking shoes after dipping our feet in the icy water. We make our way back to the footpath and, just as quickly as Aber Falls appeared, it suddenly disappears from view, and we’re submerged once again in the forest as though the last few hours were just a dream.

I’m Monica, I’m a travel blogger from the UK and I live in Wales. I started travelling and blogging in 2009 when I backpacked for two years around Asia and Australia. I travelled around Australia in an old VW campervan and stopped to work on a scuba diving and fishing island. I returned to the UK to study journalism and began a career in the world of travel writing and blogging. I spend a lot of time around North Wales, hiking in Snowdonia, paddleboarding around the Llyn Peninsula and enjoying the many gorgeous beaches!
