Will 4-day working weeks become the future and how will we spend the 3-day weekend!? Did you know that the world’s biggest trial of a new working pattern is set to commence in the UK? It will see employees working a 4-day week without losing their earnings. Yes, you read that right! This means a 3-day weekend every single week! We Brits love a Bank Holiday weekend so just imagine having that long weekend each week. If the 4-day week becomes the norm (and let’s face it, it should for many of us!) I really think it could change the way we holiday. It would be so much easier to get away for a 2–3-night break without taking any time off work. The traditional 2-week holiday could be a thing of the past and our whole year could be filled with multiple short breaks!
Staycation in Wales by Monica Stott I’m sure we’d all be more productive at work if we knew our weekends would be filled with seaside jaunts, stylish city breaks or a camping break with all our mates. For me, I’d have to get trips booked in advance to ensure that precious extra day wasn’t wasted on household chores and odd jobs.
Having a calendar filled with weekend breaks is so exciting and means you have something to look forward to throughout the whole year. I’d mix things up with half of my trips abroad and half would be staycations. But we all know short trips can be pricey (especially in the UK!) so keeping costs down would be part of the challenge. I’d keep my staycations close to home in Wales with glamping breaks in Pembrokeshire, hiking trips around Snowdonia and traditional seaside holidays to Tenby, Abersoch and the Gower Peninsula.
I’d also be booking as many budget flights as I could afford! I like to use Skyscanner and search for flights to ‘Everywhere’ on my chosen date. This reveals the cheapest flights and is great inspiration as it opens your eyes to all the places you didn’t know you could go! Cheap flights to Ljubljana? Yes please!
Spontaneous trip to Vilnius by Monica Stott Don’t be scared by destinations you’ve never heard of those places are usually the most exciting! I booked cheap flights to Vilnius in Lithuania last year when I realised I had a free long weekend coming up. It was daunting but exhilarating to step on a plane to an unknown destination and discover a whole new city. The flights cost me £20 return and the whole weekend break was under £150!
Once I’ve got my flights, I use Airbnb to book some budget accommodation and the weekend break calendar would quickly start filling up! My favourite places for weekend breaks abroad are a country's second or third cities. If I’m going to Spain, I’d avoid Barcelona and opt for Granada or Valencia instead. Valencia is just as beautiful and has a gorgeous beach but it’s much easier (and cheaper!) to tackle in just 2-3 days.
Valencia by Monica Stott If a 3-day weekend became the norm I’d also sign up to a house swap website such as Love Home Swap. For just a small monthly fee I could get away every weekend by swapping homes with someone else! I’d swap my home in Wales for a city pad in London or Edinburgh or try somewhere totally unknown for a surprise weekend.
