There’s not much I would willingly and excitedly get up for at 5am these days. There are very few exceptions and a long weekend camping in Wales is one of them.
So bright eyed and bushy tailed, the three of us hopped into the van and set out on our 4-hour trip, in no hurry other than to miss the London rush hour traffic.
Travelling early doors from London is the way to go, we were able to make it to Witney, Oxford for a pit stop and walk before most people had even snoozed their alarm.
We travelled through Powys for our first night, before stopping in Aberaeron and discovering a gem of the Welsh camping scene; Garth View. I’m going to say it now, it’s a MUST STAY! We were due to camp only one night because we were short on time but decided, before we even settled on our pitch, that we’d be prolonging the adventure. And just like magic, two workaholic city bumpkins, found peace, serenity, and joy in the ‘middle of nowhere’.
Garth View has everything you need for that escape from the everyday, or simply a change of scenery and oh-boy is the scenery breath-taking. Nothing is too much for Giovanna and her family who are by far the most welcoming hosts we’ve ever encountered. They can make even the most avid city-ite convert their rooftop cocktail parties for hilltop wine-downs.
If you like your home comforts and don’t fancy the completely wild camping feel, you’re in luck as the bathrooms at Garth View are nicer than any B&B or hotel for that matter! Coastal walks on the doorstep, you can leave the car behind and explore by foot. Childhood memories of growing up in Wales came flooding back as we crossed hobbit-like bridges over storybook streams. Just an hour’s stroll overlooking the Irish sea, Aberaeron town awaits you with the most delectable ice-cream and thirst-quenching beer whilst you watch the days sailors come into harbour.
New Quay is a little further down the road offering a sea walk suitable for all the family – 4 legged friends included. From the coast guard hut and beyond you’ve got a 2km stretch of water to let your dog’s swim to their hearts content.
Making the most of the long summers sun, we lit the fire pit (available for hire from the site), prepared dinner, sipped wine and talked to our hearts content watching as the sun dropped out the sky. With a vast expanse between each pitch if you closed your eyes, you would think you were the only ones there.
There’s something in the Welsh water, the people are positively princely, the setting is pure magic, and the atmosphere is healing. No delayed flights, check in queues, renewed passports, or baggage allowance. Staycation = a holiday on your own terms!
What did we take away from our short stay in Wales? Make memories, enjoy life and be kind!
Until next time!
