Medieval Glamping at Warwick Castle, got me more excited than a child on Christmas day! I am enchanted by history and the people that came before us and so glamping in the grounds of Warwick Castle (originally built by William the Conqueror in 1068!) got me more excited than a child on Christmas day!
We arrive at Warwick Castle and we're already thrown back into history - I watch as my two boys instantly begin waving their toy swords about as the majesty of the castle walls tower around them. In their minds they are knights and this is their castle! We're greeted by actual knights of the realm (okay, dressed-up members of staff) who come to speak to the boys, they stay in full character the whole time as the boys laugh nervously and look up to them in awe!
Becoming Dragons We follow the children's activity trail which is Zog and the Quest for the Golden Star - perfect for my two who are massive fans of Julia Donaldson's books! The trail takes us around the grounds into winding mazes until we join Sir Gadabout’s school for ambitious Knights for their final challenge, which include the children learning how use a (toy) sword as well as learning how to roar just like a dragon, before they earn their golden star and get to meet Zog himself!
Top tip: (The activity is free to do when you visit Warwick Castle (it's back on again this year 28th May until 30th September- yay!).
The Castle If the outside of the castle wasn't magnificent enough, behind the castle walls are some of the grandest interiors! I love the added touch of all of the models based on real-life people in most of the rooms, it really brings the castle to life and you can almost imagine what life was like years ago!
If you're brave enough, you can climb the castle walls at Warwick. I didn't the first time we went as I hate heights, but on our second visit I overcame my fear and decided climbing medieval walls that date back to William the Conqueror's time was an experience that I had to embrace! It was worth the nerves - the views are breathtaking, just make sure you wear comfy shoes as there are a LOT of steps!
War of the Roses The Wars of The Roses Live is a jousting show not to miss! It is included in the general admission, so there's no extra charge to watch it. My advice is to head over to it half an hour before it is due to begin to get a good view as it is rightly so, very popular! The jousting show threw me into 1455 and told the tale of the Wars of The Roses and how the Tudors came to be. Catch it this year between 23rd July - 4th September 2022.
Medieval Glamping After a day packed full of medieval fun, we head to the Knights Village where the glamping tents and woodland lodges are located. We'd parked not too far away, right by the Knights Village reception (where we got the padlock for our tent) and from there it's just a five-minute walk.
There are two types of glamping tents - the Kings Luxury tent and the Warwick tent and we have stayed in both, our favourite being the Kings Luxury tent of course! The Kings Luxury tent has a superb medieval-themed 4-poster bed as well as two single beds either side. The tent features wooden flooring, a chair, a large oak storage chest, a large mirror as well as being fully lit with 2 power sockets, plus towels and free WIFI.
Outside the tent there is space to sit down and look out to the river as well as a chessboard table and a barrel to store our drinks and snacks on - perfect! My husband accidentally stumbles across hidden colour-changing lighting on the backboard of the main bed, so we definitely could have had our own tent disco in there! About a minute's walk away are shared on-site toilets and heated showers with toilet paper and hand wash and the outside is (rather prettily) lit so there's no stumbling around at night trying to get to the toilet.
Before bed, we take the boys to listen to a bedtime story told by a Knight, his tales make us all laugh out loud and we're surrounded by pretty, cosy lighting as the sun goes down - such an amazing experience! Back in our medieval but luxury tent and as the temperature dips, we all feel very snuggled and cosy in our beds as the duvets are really thick and warm! The end of a perfect day before breakfast in the medieval banqueting hall, a spot of archery and more exploring tomorrow!
